I was lucky enough to be part of two IPOs, and (perhaps similar to you) had an alphabet soup of stock comp grants (NSOs, ISOs, and RSUs). Even with 20+ years’ experience in finance and investments, it took dozens of hours to research and decide upon a plan: How does this type of grant work? How and when is it taxed? Stock-comp is complex. Sometimes investing is too. The planning process doesn’t have to be. Our process is data-driven, rational, and decision-oriented. There are a lot of things we could do; but typically only a few we should do.
Intentional Decision Making
Unasked and unanswered questions rarely benefit anyone. To do our job well, we make sure we ask the right questions and consider the alternatives.
Focus on Returns After Taxes and Fees
Net dollars after taxes and fees are what matters. Period. A 7% return less 1% tax > an 8% return less 3% tax (even if it's less fun to brag about)
